People tell me about XMPP and IRC, but what they forget is that my original post includes the impossible task to get people you know to move there.
@volpeon at this point I've decided the hassle isn't worth it and I'll just move somewhere myself if I need to, and if my friends actually give a shit they'll follow me there, if only to talk to me. I've been running 3 chat apps at startup for years now just to keep up with people, surely I'm not the only person who should have to extend the same courtesy
