          I realize this comes across as a bit snooty of dismissive but so many people lean on ads because they don't have a catalog.

          But without a catalog, ads become very expensive in both time, money, and focus that might be better spent on building the catalog so that ad amortize across 10 books instead of 2

            I'd missed this comment, sorry. I've got about fifteen books, and still haven't managed to get ads working.

            But that's not to disagree with you. I agree that if you only have one or two books, the best marketing is to write the next book. Unfortunately, few people seem to want to hear that.

              @nlowell @authorhelp I think there's a middle ground here, but yeah, a catalogue is better than one book and a lot of advertising.

              Still, advertising on Amazon is paying money to Amazon so Amazon can show your book while also trying to sell something else that's not your book to the same person.

              That doesn't make any sense to me, to be extremely polite.
