    JOHNNY MANDEL
    M*A*S*H (Original Soundtrack Recording)
    1970 Canada pressing

    Simultaneously one of my favorite #movies AND #television shows of all time.

    The show was CONSTANTLY on in syndication when I was a kid (4 episodes a day on two different channels EVERY day), and that theme song was so haunting to me even as a ten year old.

    It took me until I was about 13 to realize that there was a MOVIE first, which came out a whole 2 years previous to the show.

    This soundtrack of course has “Suicide Is Painless” on it, as well as dialogue from the movie, including some hilarious intercom announcements.

    Robert Altman was on record many times stating he loathed and despised the television show.

    Your loss, dude.

        @TheVinylApe director Robert Altman tried to write lyrics, but couldn't think stupid enough. His 15 year old son wrote the lyrics and made over $1 million for the song, his dad made $70k for making the movie

          @TheVinylApe Judging by the fact that the final episode was like the most watched thing in US television history, I think Robert Altman had it wrong.

                @TheVinylApe My enduring memory of that show is laying in bed, hearing it from the living room as my parents watched it. (It was on at my bedtime when I was a kid. In the UK syndication was not a thing.)

                I have the DVD box set sitting here. It came in this cloth covered box to look like a medical kit.

                Contains both the movie and the TV show.

                  @TheVinylApe yeah, I also grew up watching the show and later caught up with the movie. They’re very different animals, and neither without their faults, but incredibly formative for me.

                    @donutage totally.
                    That’s a very important qualifier for both. “Neither without their faults”.
