@zackwhittaker It changed my thinking about Vision Pro (which was somewhere along the lines of "useless and expensive") when I heard from blind people who were able to use it to cook from a recipe. I can't read the article -- not a Bloomberg subscriber. However, I can imagine ways that this could work with privacy preservation: E.g., if facial recognition only worked for people in mutual contact lists. That might be really helpful as an assistive device? I am not saying "give Apple the benefit of the doubt." They burned that when they banned the ICE reporting apps. But I can think of a way that it could work and respect privacy.

@zackwhittaker it is a fundamental right! They’re the only big tech company that doesn’t seem to poorly handle personal data. Are Google and Meta any better when it comes to data privacy?

@zackwhittaker unpopular opinion: Apple had that stance only because it's a market differentiator + they did not have the data analytics do otherwise.

@zackwhittaker @briankrebs “graph must always go up and to the right” eventually seems to trump any notion of looking out for the interests of your customers or the public at large. See also Google dropping “don’t be evil”, because such an impossibly high standard was an unacceptable drag on their profitability, or something.

@zackwhittaker I think the hypocrisy goes at least back to AirTags, which are actually awesome technology (I use them!) but which definitely create a public privacy hazard.
The principle at play seems to be that Apple believes in privacy for Apple users. They don't really care about the implications for non-users and the public at large.

@zackwhittaker mostly marketing with some truth to it but of which a mostly western marketing campaign in china they went belly up on the privacy issue there. They dont care there.

This one time I was offered a job, long ago, it was for Apple.
I listened to the long spiel about how we shouldn't leave the compound or talk to anyone on our cars in the parking lot on breaks or while waiting for shifts to start, would be fired if caught carrying paper or pencil on premises because all notes business or personal written on the compound by Apple employees had to be on official devices, were prohibited from carrying anything in a bag (including food and medicine) that wasn't searched and approved for that day, and how the relatively low pay for a job that could end at any time, most likely if we showed up even a few minutes late in the extreme weather conditions that would slow traffic down so take two or three times the usual trip time if not stop if completely was actually well worth it because we would know about the amazing features of the phones we couldn't afford and were discouraged from owning.
Then I pointed to the other conditional new hires this sounded like worker abuse and started a walkout by refusing to sign the rest of the large stack of paperwork that included a type of gag order (I forget the legal name for but that has since been made illegal).
I was desperate for a job but not *that* desperate.
It wasn't a high security job or anything, only customer service. I've had government jobs with higher security clearances that were nothing like that, because it would've been torn apart in courts.
Apple throws money at fines, avoids criminal charges against prominent people, and keeps going.

@zackwhittaker Apple is a corporation and as such, doesn't have a stance, that was a marketing slogan. No more.
@happyborg @zackwhittaker That is probably true, but Apple knows marketing better than anyone. So my guess would’ve been they’d recognize the importance of doing things differently, the way they used to.
But things may have changed.
