Nova likes to chew on rocks. We’ve been trying to discourage her, but check out this geode she found and cracked open with her teeth! Maybe she’s destined to be a geologist! This is quartz, right? #mondog #dogs #dogsOfFedi #dogsOfMastodon #geology #dogsWithJobs

@Recalcitrant Yeah, looks like it. How did she manage to crack it open with her teeth? 😳

@Recalcitrant from the look of it I thought it was more like "crack crack crack". Her teeth must be made of diamonds!

@iwritelike we just adopted her a few weeks ago and the rescue thinks she’s about a year old so the teeth are brand new and SHARP and STRONG. but I want her to stop chewing on rocks because she could break a tooth or accidentally swallow it!

@CorvidCrone omggg my sweet baby girl who just passed, Kala, was a boxer/pit/australian cattle dog mix. This girl is bigger than Kala for sure… The rescue thinks she’s a pit/lab mix but I wanna do a DNA test because it was fun to get percentages for Kalita.

@Recalcitrant Unfortunately, I know very little about dogs in this matter. When cats consistently eat inedible objects, it is called pica. It looks like dogs can have it too, but pica means animals actually swallow the rocks. I also know that puppies munch on different objects when they are teething.
Also, it is usually extremely hard to crack rocks open, unless she somehow chooses pre-cracked rocks.

@iwritelike she SHOULD be done teething but I think it must just be her continued way of exploring. She’ll spit them out eventually we believe but we take them out of her mouth when we see her do it because risk of swallowing is scary.
I think this rock MUST have been partially cracked, but I can’t confirm because I didn’t see it before we pulled the two halves out of her mouth

@CorvidCrone yesss I always told Kala that we bought her a house. They wouldn’t let her be on the deed because she’s a dog but it’s for her. Love the sweatshirt!!!! Hope you get one.

@plantago Thank you for sharing 🥺🥺🥺 our sweet baby who passed recently had no front teeth and one vet theorized that it might have been from chewing on bars at some point in her life when she was locked up for too long 💔
