The first thing that people see when visiting https://codeberg.org is the following: "Software development, but free!"

However, projects hosted on Codeberg are not necessarily by developers of software—on the other hand, deciding on a new slogan can be difficult and contentious, as first impressions really matter (and there's not a lot of space there).

So, one of the people controlling the social media account decided to ask the fediverse: Any good ideas?

@Codeberg Shouldnt it be a more a catchy “value proposition”? Something that will tell the visitor what Codeberg is?

“Full-featured Git hosting, zero corporate strings attached.”

“Keep your code away from AI training pipelines — privacy-first hosting by a community-owned platform.”

“EU-based hosting with true data sovereignty — you can trust where your code lives.”

“Non-profit, community-driven governance — features and priorities shaped by developers, not investors.”

“No telemetry, no ads — just reliable, open-source code hosting you can depend on.”

Keep in mind that this is explicitly not a public vote, but rather a "call for inspiration", if we may. We'd rather avoid a Boaty McBoatface (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boaty_McBoatface) type of situation, but humorous suggestions remain nevertheless welcome! 😉

Tip: A bunch of ideas we have gotten so far involve the themes "mountain"/"summit", "unlike the 'rest of the Internet'", "retreat", "iceberg", "cool"... there miiiight be something behind those, but we also welcome out-of-the-box suggestions. 🙂

@Codeberg I rather like the idea of just leaving the tagline as “Insert catchy slogan here”. But maybe that’s just me.

"Free software, is just the tip of the iceberg"

The first thing that people see when visiting https://codeberg.org is the following: "Software development, but free!"

@Codeberg Maybe just a simple "You are welcome"
                                        - Personal and direct
                                        - Welcoming/inviting
                                        - Non-technical, approachable
                                        - Subtly acknowledges gratitude toward the volunteers driving the project
                                        - Implies that users will appreciate and thank the team for the great product

Tip: A bunch of ideas we have gotten so far involve the themes "mountain"/"summit", "unlike the 'rest of the Internet'", "retreat", "iceberg", "cool"... there miiiight be something behind those, but we also welcome out-of-the-box suggestions. 🙂

@Codeberg does it have to in English? It is the defacto standard of the west but I would love something in german, french, esperanto or whatever but english
