My dad has come screaming to me "what is this crap, get it off my screen" because of an update notification. I see it when I happen to sit near him to help him though something. He just doesn't have the patience to even try to read what's on screen. He just scrolls to the bottom and then curses about not finding what he was looking for. It's there, he just scrolled right past because he didn't have the patience.

Have a look at #guix, maybe just help increase the number of packages and services available there... Scheme is a pretty easy to learn language and widely taught in CS education.
I support this recommendation.
Another *ixOS will take years to take of, like the others did. And I think, the world/community/… will benefit more if joining efforts strengthening the existing ones instead of having yet another *ixOS.

@codemonkeymike the main computer I use for work was built in 2017. I use several "junk" Desktops for running game development workshops, some are as old as 14 years. Usually all they need to run Linux well is some extra RAM and a cheap graphics card (eg GT1030).

I get the basic idea behind nixOS and its scripting language that handles configuration. I'm planning to replace the nix language with Ruby/Perl, since those languages are already known, and it would save people the trouble of learning the nix language, and would draw more people in to nixOS.
@purrperl @thegardendude @codemonkeymike You mean making your own Nix based OS but then written in Perl/Ruby? I wish you honestly success, share your work when done

Not only is Linux helping prevent e-waste, it's providing secure, powerful and free access to the digital world to people who otherwise would not have any (except maybe a crappy phone). -

Debian is nonprofit. Use the default version, Debian Stable Trixie to avoid new potentially buggy features -

I ask bc I use Kubuntu for my daily driver but I wouldnt assume KDE is compatible with the slower computers

@codemonkeymike There's another angle on this too, for a number of people with disabilities this same "it's not really a choice" idea applies, but with macOS being the thing. Because while Windows has some assistive tech, Linux has very little, and what is there isn''t installed by default or easy to set up and use. This particularly sucks in situations like this where Linux is being looked at as the primary OS for these older systems.

@codemonkeymike Our 2012 Latitude has been running Debian/Xfce contentedly for most of a decade now, once Windows got too bloated for it.
After last year's HDD -> SSD upgrade it's nice and mostly-snappy, and I figure it'll chug along usefully for at *least* five more years.

@codemonkeymike I’ve got an unsupported MacBook Air and an even older MacBook Pro that I have running Debian 13; works great on them. Now if only we could get phones to open up a bit, I could do something with an old iPhone 11 Pro and LG Stylo 6 I’ve got

@codemonkeymike Well, WinXP probably installs fine on all of them and there are enough free licenses or circumventions available. Now it depends a lot on what you want to do with it. If you want to run older games offline, then that's maybe even a usable choice. If you want to do online banking and Internet browsing, well, don't do that with an OS out of support.

@http ehh yeah. This isn't computers for shits and giggles to play commander keen. I'm trying to get people useful computers for school, work, etc. Win XP ain't cutting it?

@xoagray yup I agree. Again. I'm a huge believer in the right tool for the job. Sometimes it's MacOS, sometimes it's Windows and sometimes it's Linux.
My thesis here is that Linux is never even considered for most people when it very well might be the right tool.
