So… Lisbon sucks massive ass in the rain. Normally I love to walk a city, but it’s cold, constantly raining and too windy for umbrellas. So we’re just doing one museum after another and I must say, #Lisbon has some spectacular museums 1/

First we had breakfast and then went to a really odd museum that used to be a private house of an eccentric modernist Mr Madeiros e Almeida - he was a mad collector https://www.museumedeirosealmeida.pt/

Finally we went to one of the best collections of Asian and Southeast Asian art I’ve ever seen. Really unassuming place and criminally under promoted but their collection is massive and extremely well curated https://casaasia-cfc.scml.pt/

@RIJim It’s been so cold and wet! I’ve never had a winter like this before.

This last one - The Francisco Capelo Collection - we were the only visitors we saw. It’s so sad. Exquisite collections of Japanese and Chinese pottery, lacquerware, painting, textiles. And some really rare things like armour from Mindanao, masks from Bali. Amazing Buddhas from all over.

@PMFL I must come back in the summer, because people are lovely and it is a beautiful place. I will not hold the weather against it!

@Remittancegirl I cancelled a trip to Lille in November cos of a forecast of constant rain. Supposed to be going in March now but schlepping about in the drizzle isn’t much fun.

Also, I have to mention the tiny, frumpy hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant we went to last night. It’s run by a family who’ve been serving Vietnamese food in Japan, Angola, Mozambique and finally Lisbon.

The phớ bộ was so good that I wept. It made me so homesick for Vietnam. the broth was just that good https://maps.app.goo.gl/S7pEWxbnJaGWbcou9?g_st=ic

@arratoon if it were only drizzle it would be fine. But you can’t open an umbrella without it turning inside out!

@Remittancegirl These are my favorite kinds of vacation days. So many hidden gems to be found when the weather turns hateful.
