This is a really big escalation in attacking trans people and their providers. Let me say that I live in the area from which this grand jury investigation was promulgated. This is absolutely jurisdictional shopping. I’m not positive, but I may have been called for this case. I was recently summoned for grand jury, but was voir dired out when they found out I had a PhD in bioethics. It could be coincidence though.
No prosecutor in #Texas should be able to bring cases against doctors in another state that have no connection to Texas. It’s insane overreach.
Look man, trans folk have been around as long as there have been folks. They’re not hurting anyone, in fact they themselves are suffering an enormous amount of harm by people just not letting them live their lives. Fascists have picked transpeople the same way the Nazis started with LGBTQ, then moved on to disabled people, then Jews and Roma, and on and on.
Don’t be a #Nazi.

A federal grand jury in the Northern District of Texas issued the subpoena demanding information on every minor who received gender-affirming care since 2020.

@MissConstrue This is insane, just flat out illegal for the North Texas district to do that out of its jurisdiction.

@MissConstrue To be clear, a federal grand jury can issue nationwide subpoenas, but not randomly for issues unrelated to a case within their jurisdiction.

@RegGuy If applying logic, certainly. However, logic has left the building.
Texas is using a FEDERAL grand jury in the Northern District of Texas to issue criminal subpoenas related to gender-affirming care provided in New York.
This jurisdictional reach is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration’s #DOJ to investigate and challenge care nationally, leveraging a conservative federal court known for favorable rulings on similar matters.
Legal experts have criticized this as "forum shopping", arguing that investigating conduct in New York through a Texas grand jury lacks proper jurisdictional grounds and appears designed to intimidate providers.
This is a pattern: in April 2026, the same Texas district court enforced a subpoena against a Rhode Island hospital.
Standing in the way of the case are NY Shield Laws, lack of proper jurisdiction, Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Due Process and State Sovereignty.

@darwinwoodka I just wish I could get my kid and her partner out of here.

@RegGuy Also important to note, grand jury indictments are ridiculously easy to get. The running joke is that you could indict a ham sandwich with a grand jury. They don't have to present anything but the prosecutors side, even in cases where the prosecutor is just making shit up...see Lindsay Halligan and the DOJ.

Might wanna update that sandwich metaphor tho...

Hugs to all. Do they have a destination in mind? We've helped two trans ladies get to Canada in the last year, one for school there and one had a partner there.
Our enby is determined to fight and currently in Salt Lake City, which is surprisingly LGBTQ friendly. I have a Mormon high school friend there who just came out this year!
Eldest is a furry in Seattle and is going to Scottsdale this week to be with and support a friend getting bottom surgery there.

Except this isn't about anything that happened in Texas. This is an attempt to use a Grand Jury in Texas to investigate things that happened in New York. It's blatantly unconstitutional- the Constitution says crimes must be tried in the state and district where they happened- but the Trump DOJ isn't going to let the Constitution slow them down. -

I'm surprised at that because in my experience on a grand jury, they didn't really do voir dire. They just accepted everyone who was willing to say they weren't racist. Probably a state by state difference though.

@darwinwoodka Her partner is still at the new graduate stage of airplane mechanics. Not quite, she's been doing it a year or so, but not enough big plane experience to move to one of the big unionized carriers. Once she achieves that rank, then they can pretty much go anywhere with an airport.
Daughter inherited my father's ability to speak almost any language with what looks like very little effort, so I've been encouraging them to look at Europe.
But, you know the landscape looks different for them than for me.

It's blatantly unconstitutional- the Constitution says crimes must be tried in the state and district where they happened- but the Trump DOJ isn't going to let the Constitution slow them down.Texas passed the "Long Arm of the Law" statute nonsense a little while back, but that only applies to civil cases, and has pretty much been shot down every time it's been attempted.
And even in that absurd law, it's very clear that it has to involve Texans, and Texas.
This indictment is trying to reach all the way into NY, despite no patients, doctors or anything else having anything at all to do with Texas.
There is no jurisdiction here, as far as I can tell. I expect it to be swatted away by a judge. But they're gonna keep trying.

@gbargoud In a case where they are clearly venue shopping, in an area filled with medical people and a philosophy programs, AND they are trying to get a guaranteed result, then they will tailor their questionnaire to weed out the people who are likely to ask questions about their conclusions.
Grand Juries, under this DOJ are being used for naked personal and political gain, much to the detriment of the system at large.

It absolutely should get swatted down, but I'm worried that it won't be. DOJ has been jurisdiction shopping. They aren't just doing this in Texas; they're doing it in a specific part of Texas that guarantees they're going to get a wingnut judge who is overseen by the wingnut 5th Circuit. I no longer have any confidence these courts will follow the Constitution when they have an opportunity to advance right-wing goals. -
