Does anyone have any tips for how to cycle in a skirt/dress? I normally wear leggings anyway so modesty isn’t the issue, it’s more what to do to stop fabric flapping.

I also haven’t ridden a bike in ages so this could be interesting 🫣

@helenclayton bikes used to have protections on the rear wheel, and the posture used to be more upright, so that skirts flapped down instead of up.

@helenclayton I scruffed it up in my lap and used a hair tie to hold it together. It was only a short cycle to work. I wouldn't recommend it otherwise, it wasn't exactly comfortable.

@helenclayton So, you have a few options:
          1) penny and a hairband https://blog.gearchase.com/women-bike-hack-how-to-cycle-in-a-skirt-without-flashing-your-panties/
          2) something like this https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/781271303/clip-for-rain-skirt-or-cape-for-cycling

@Wen I am going to experiment with clipping the hem up. I live in walking leggings/trousers mostly but all my tidy clothes are frocks and I need to be presentable.

@patrickhadfield @Wen yes, although women are now liberated from the frock, it is my clothing of choice (when not wearing walking trousers but I’d wear a walking frock if I could make one).

@helenclayton I’ve seen people use one of those c-shaped headbands to secure the skirt to a thigh!

@helenclayton if a skirt and you are wearing leggings, could you just take it off, roll it up and stow, then don when you reach destination?

@IcooIey yes, someone else has suggested that. I’ll try various things and outfits. This is all because I don’t possess smart trousers.

@Hellybootwader that’s also a good thought. All my frocks/skirts are full skirted.

You could gather the fabric with strong clothes pegs or binder clips either to the back or sides depending on the volume.

@helenclayton two words: skirt guard. they're helpful for a rider of any gender.

@helenclayton What would you need in a walking frock to make it walkable? That dounds like a good diy #makers project.
