In honor of this important anniversary, I downloaded the original Flash SWF file from Internet Archive, played it using Ruffle in a full-screen window, and replaced the audio with the original MP3 of "Invasion of the Gabber Robots" by The Laziest Men on Mars. So this is probably the highest fidelity encoding possible, without going back to the original forum GIFs.

https://jwz.org/b/yk3i@jwz one time at work there was a form I really didn't want people printing (fuck printing) so I encoded that in white type on a white background on the web page: ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.
On screen, invisible, but those bloated LaserJet 4si would turn it to regular black type.
People lost their shit. Some called me up "have we been haaaaacked??"
I would just say, "you printed the form, didn't you?"

https://jwz.org/b/yk3i@jwz It is... hard, to think back far enough to really remember the emotional tone of being hit with this by someone.
"You haven't seen AYBABTU?"
"What's an AYBABTU?"
... and then this happened.
It felt... weird. And a little tedious. Like the joke is clear at way before the halfway point.
And yet... It also felt, I dunno... Significant? That one person could do this for like no money on the stuff they had rigged together?
I think that was the most important part. The "Check out what one person can do" part.
(... given, of course, that the one person hadn't actually created all the art assets they pulled from. A fact that would also prove significant in the future...)

"All Your Base Are Belong To Us" WoW Now that takes me back to the good old days of the Net.
Long before MySpace or Facebook, back in a time where it was IRC Chat & Internet Forums like phpBB or vBulletin.
Good Exploits sure lasted way longer back then.
Thanks for the flashback to old times. -

https://jwz.org/b/yk3iI was working as a network security engineer at a major data center provider (pre-cloud, people rented space in data centers and bought servers to put in them! Barbaric, I know).
Anyway I sat one cubical over from the team that did spam monitoring.
Someone in IRC said “all your base are belong to us.”
I mused out loud as to what that could mean and a lady from the spam team overheard me and yelled loudly “OH GOD NOT YOU TOO”

The peak of SWF for me was Happy Tree Friends.
I downloaded all the Flash files I could, and then I bought the DVDs.
