My initial experience on #Mastodon was quite disheartening.
I couldn't find things I liked, and even posting didn't feel entirely safe. I once posted about a new feature on I Write Like and got berated by a respectable-looking man for using as many as 3 tags for the post. That only added to my confusion.
Everything changed yesterday thanks to your helpful replies. I no longer feel like I'm sitting on a tree stump in the middle of nothingness. I have new accounts to explore. Thank you so much! -

Glad to hear you've stuck with it.

Thank you so much!@iwritelike Yeah, there are some people on here who really think everyone needs to hear their unwanted opinion on everything.
Glad that didn't sour your experience!

Tagging accounts and using hashtags are fundamental on the Fediverse, as they are often followed by people to find posts about topics outside their usual list of accounts, as well as being used to filter unwanted posts. It's normally recommended to use them, as long as they are correct for the post they're used on.
Unless I'm missing something and another type of tag was meant?
Anyway, glad you're still here

.I mean, it depends on how relevant the tags are for the content posted, I think.
Some people tag even a passing housefly, when it's barely alluded to in a post. If I'm a #.housefly enthusiast and I see a post that has nothing to do with houseflies in the tag, I would be annoyed.
It's happened with several tags I've followed, too. It makes the tags unusable if no one respects their purpose. So generally it's recommended not to use too many tags. But there's no hard limit.

@cassolotl Oh, I didn't even have to block him. He ranted at me and then informed me that he'd blocked me. The place definitely feels more welcoming now. I've been going through all the replies and discovering new accounts. This is a new experience for me.
