@thibaultmol @UkeleleEric @eden @Blender that's not how psychology works
money comes with strings stretched whether you can see them or not, whether they're talked about or not

Is this The Onion?

@Blender Leaving all the ethics aside, let's take the crooked money!

As if wording were the problem.
-
@keeya this applies to most large corporate dev fund members. We take donations to pursue Blender's mission. Individual donations is what helps to keep the balance.
@fsiddi Imho there is a thin red line between random corporate sponsor and companies like the "ai fash clique" that are actively trying to do harm. Whether deliberately or out of pure arrogance or ignorance. Sure, it's money that makes a good project get further. But you always need to be aware from where the money comes from.

@Blender Although the person behind this account may not even be involved in the agreement, it is still a bad idea. It's taking blood money from an entity hostile to creatives. That threat to their livelihoods alone is bad already. But the party involved is actively supporting fascism. As in: Destroying lives, human and nature alike.
Not cool, man. Not cool.
There must be better ways to get funding. Better does not always mean easy, but there are better ways.

@Blender Amazingly terrible decision. Just stunning. Accepting money from some demonstrably horrible org like Anthropic aligns you with them and their values. Are these your values now?
Return the money, refuse it, or whatever - or, I suppose, show that you can be bought and that you don't actually care about anyone but yourselves.
-
All right, Francesco here - CEO at Blender. I'm going to spend some time to try and respond. If you have direct questions or comments, reply here!
@fsiddi
1. Why even accept donations from a company that isn't profitable?
2. How come you didn't realize the PR disaster? -

@Blender so gross. I wanted to learn how to use Blender soon, don't think I'll bother now. This leaves a bad taste to the idea now

@Blender the minimal morally defensible position is to reject genai entirely. it's inherently abusive technology, built on mountains of violence and has the purpose of devaluing humanity
if you want anthropic to sponsor you, sure, but then also have a full genai ban and a hostile stance against it -

Thanks for announcing this before I put significant energy into learning how to use Blender, because typically I name drop for the programs I use.
I feel bad for my 3D artist peers, tho.
-
@Blender It's not the announcement, that's tone-deaf. It's the actual acceptance of dirty money by a bad actor that's tone-deaf.
Just in case you forgot: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y4jpg922qo
They paid $1.5bn because they were IRREFUTABLY CAUGHT PIRATING.

@Blender This is terrible, if you can not understand why this is terrible you should not only ask yourselves if you are the bad guys, you should also answer yes.
