    On International Mother Language Day, we celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity that defines our Union, as well as the importance of protecting and promoting mother tongues across Europe.

    The EU is home to:
    🌍 24 official languages
    🎉 60 regional or minority languages spoken by 40 million people

    Multilingualism is a founding principle of our Union and part of what makes our continent so vibrant.

    This diversity is our strength.

      @EUCommission

      It's funny, that you post this in #English and solely in English. Which is the official language only in two member nations, #Irelande and #Malta, and even there second to #Irish and #Maltese, respectively.

      I know, that my #Basque and #Catalan friends will not be happy: But how about declaring #Spanish THE official language of the #EU? It is the second largest language in number of native speakers after #Mandarin, and it's nine times the native speakers of English inside the EU.

                @ASardinianAbroad @EUCommission My point is that, while some languages are promoted inside UE, some aren’t welcome.

                @faket @ASardinianAbroad @EUCommission I don't experience it like this, in my EU country schools offer special classes for students who speak a different native language at home, my own town offers a total of 55 languages currently, the following languages are the top 5: Arabic, Assyrian, Somali, Bosnian, and English. If all these 55 languages were not welcome why is the state investing so much in giving kids access to tuition in their native languages?

                    @faket @EUCommission that's a good point.
                    Language represents the identity of a people, so I support the full recognition of all languages that define identity.

                      @ASardinianAbroad @EUCommission Yeah, of course, but at least here in french speaking European country (but my guess would be that that’s the same for other languages), we did all we could to suppress all local languages for the sake of the nation. Now we are accepting some others languages but some are well accepted, others not that much.

                      UE saying that "Multilingualism is a founding principle of our Union" while killing immigrants on the Mediterranean See is abject.

                        @kinkkong @EUCommission having only one official language would be equally wrong, since it's not representative of the multiculturalism of the EU. I agree that some languages are missing representation, but this should push for recognising them as official languages too, instead of choosing only one.

                            @gunchleoc @EUCommission I was not referring at all to languages (even culture). I have no problems with that. Why would I otherwise speak 3 and learn a 4th European language. It's about co-operation (military and economically) in the EU and thinking bigger than just my own "National interest". E.g. economically: less national boundaries to regulations, 1 EU approval, etc. E.g. military: too much overlap, no unified command structure, competing systems, ... e.g. https://subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026/02/france-germanys-next-generation-fighter-project-is-dead-00768936

                              @kinkkong @EUCommission honestly, using a language that is not the official language of one of the big countries of the EU (but is widely known as a second language) sounds better than giving undue advantage to the people in a country that already has a big population.

                              And besides, if that single language had to be chosen by number of EU speakers, I believe that German or French would come first, then Italian¹, and only then Spanish

                              ¹ please don't! too many Italians are already self-centered assholes, they don't need to be helped gain confidence in their cultural importance this way.

                                @kinkkong @EUCommission Ya que quieres promover el español te respondo en español. ¿Por qué el mensaje en inglés? Bueno si pudieras pararte ahora mismo en medio de una calle en Berlin, Praga, Helsiski o cualquier capital europea y le preguntas a la gente que pase que otro idioma hablan a parte de su idioma nativo, habrá muchos más que hablen inglés. El español es grande, si, pero no tan grande como para considerarse una lingua franca.

                                  Hi @kinkkong! We are dedicated to diversity and multilingualism. However, this particular social media page is in English because, for practical reasons, it is not feasible to do it in all 24 official EU languages.

                                  You could consider checking out the pages run by our colleagues in the EU Representations in the Member States, which are available for every country and in every EU language. Find out more here: https://link.europa.eu/dhBrwm

                                    I don'd want to be so bad with the EU, don't miss undertand me, I'm a fan of EU work because it seems like it's is going to somewhere.

                                    I only want to give you this advice, Sukarno was a politician that unified the language of a serie of litle islands and it's necesary to face:

                                    Canada.
                                    United Estates.
                                    Russia.
                                    Kazakhistan.

                                    As one great power in this 21 Century.

                                    So much thanks EU.

                                      @EUCommission Muttersprache ist ok. Aber ich muss nicht überall meine Vatersprache sprechen sondern kann auch die Sprache meines Wohnortes lernen und dort sprechen .

                                      Oder mann erfindet eine gemeinsame Einheitssprache für die EU, sowas wie Esperanto. Müsste dann aber überall in der Schule gelehrt werden.

                                      Jedenfalls kein US-Englisch.

                                      Is Irish and Maltese English okay? 🤔

                                        The claim colonialist conquests as "native", is dubious.

                                          @kinkkong @EUCommission Ya que quieres promover el español te respondo en español. ¿Por qué el mensaje en inglés? Bueno si pudieras pararte ahora mismo en medio de una calle en Berlin, Praga, Helsiski o cualquier capital europea y le preguntas a la gente que pase que otro idioma hablan a parte de su idioma nativo, habrá muchos más que hablen inglés. El español es grande, si, pero no tan grande como para considerarse una lingua franca.

                                          @giovaelpe @EUCommission

                                          Bueno, el mensaje de inicio es en inglés, entonces respondi en inglés.

                                          En Berlín hay tanta gente que habla español, es impresionante. Muchos latin@s, pero tambien muchos jovenes que lo aprenden en la escuela.

                                          Todavía, mi inglés es mejor que mi español. Pero me parece mucho más fácil aprender español que inglés. Entonces es más apto como lingua franca de la #UE.
