The UK Right-Wing parties are going hard today on how the UK is a Christian country. The thing is we're actually an A-Religious country. 30% say they have no religion when asked. 30% were brought up in a faith but haven't though about it since they were 10. 20% know what to do in a place of worship, but only ever go for weddings and funerals. Which leaves 10% who are just getting old.

    It's not that we're Atheist. We're A-Religious. We're simply not interested and don't care.

@jbond given the origins of the anglican church, this makes perfect sense actually.

@jbond But again we have an established church (in England) and its head is the monarch, so we live in a theocracy.. Time to dis-establish.

@jbond I've somehow been given to understand that UK folks are kind of lightly christianized tree-worshipping druids or something. With really fine old church architecture.

Edit to add: which actually sounds quite appealing to me. And choral music can be nice!

Most English people became apatheists but couldn't be bothered to show up to their initiation ceremony (which is correct)

@jbond in my exp, a lotta yt British ppl call themselves Christian but have no affinity w Christianity & no familiarity w religious texts & contemporary belief. like, i was brought up CofE by my mom, who only ever went church for midnight mass & did not share Christian values. like, the most she got in contact w the church outside yearly is when i was questioning my developing religious connections to witchcraft, when she asked the vicar to come rid me of it. but the Baptists, Methodists, Sikhs, Muslims & Roman Catholics in my area r far more on their worship than the CofE folks ik & it's beautiful seeing ppl dressed in their best on a Sunday come shop & share meals & stuff yk? & it just says a lot abt these fuckers chatting from a yt perspective ig, bc yea statistically, the UK isnt super Christian, but theres still so many ppl of faith around who care so deeply abt their worship, & its erasing those ppls faith bc sooo many ppl care so much abt their connections w it

In the last (2021) Census the proportion of people saying they had no religion was 37.2%. The proportion saying they were Christian was 46.2%, so more than those of no religion but still a minority.

@marjolica @jbond actively atheist here. I abhor "Christianity" in particular. I have little lived knowledge of others. Christians i have lived amongst are rank hypocrites & do not live according to their faith at all.

@marjolica Of those 46.2% who say they are Christian, I believe most actually mean they were brought up as Christian. But they haven't actually practiced since school and don't think about religion at all, at all.

This is pretty much what I was trying to get at with
                        "A-Religious".

I do feel some sympathy for Atheists. But I hate the way the Theists get to define us in their terms. As if there are only two choices. Believe in God or Believe there is no God. I choose the third way. There is no Belief.

                            An old Buddhist story.

                            Six monks were talking

The first said "The flag moves"
The second, "It's the wind that moves"
The third, "It's the mind that moves"
                            The fourth, "What flag?"
                            The fifth, "What wind?"
                            The sixth, "What mind?"

@jbond Well, I'm hoping there's nothing after I die because if there's some jerk intelligence responsible for all this why would it get suddenly better after I'm dead. If there is something responsible for all this I'd pound it flat with a hammer until there's just a wet spot.

@jbond Well, howdy there! Yeah, I believe I'm going back to the same place I was from before I got here.

@LevZadov @Sine_Nomine @marjolica Universe does appear to have some mathematical justification for this position.

                                        @jbond @LevZadov @Sine_Nomine @marjolica Everything is in entropy.

There is no God. God was constructed to ensure our 'bad' actions would be judged. God is a political device.
