      @davidgerard Ye so if a device got upgraded after the fact to higher memory amount, and somewhere in the process of repairing it that component got removed (without lenovo or the repair center) knowing that it actually was after the fact upgraded.

      This can happen, sucks a lot but like would not see it as malice.

      @davidgerard Normally this work / repair work is contracted out so you could check if you can contact the exact repair center that you send the device to to figure out if they know /can check what happened as a next step.

        well, here's a wacky one. My 32GB Lenovo went back for a warranty repair in January. I finally noticed this last night - no wonder I've been running out of memory.

        Chatting to the live service, their records say it's a 16GB machine, mate!

        It was certainly 32GB when I got it, and I even have the syslog of installation in Nov 2024 saying it's got 32GB.

        Anyone else had Lenovo try to pull something similar?

        also, they don't and *can't* email you the chat logs. Odd as they're material to the case. I'll be GDPRing those I think.

        @davidgerard Oddly i had this happen about 21 years ago. I had been given a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a pentiumM 1.6ghz processor inside. Due to unforeseeable circumstances the machine needed to go in for repair which included a board swap. What i got back was a 1.5ghz Pentium M machine. sadly it wasnt until many years later i noticed the 100mhz difference. Still mad about it to this day.

              @davidgerard @Pholostan Isn't the serial number in the UEFI or printed on the motherboard too? Maybe they swapped the bottom panel (where the serial number is printed) to a replacement laptop. That would be an extremely lazy & fast way to do "repairs" while making it seem like nothing is wrong.

                  @clickhere @piraat @davidgerard Not as remarkable as you think: laptop hardware really is not ideal for data centers. At all. (For one thing, they really really want ECC RAM. That's one of those places where that bit drift can actually matter.) It's not even really the right type of hardware... Plus they usually put pretty crappy RAM in laptops. It would actually hinder performance even of a server.

                  Nah, they either screwed up carelessly or were trying to be cheap.

                      @davidgerard oh shit, did you just uncover a black market RAM racket being operated by Lenovo service techs? ๐Ÿ‘€

                      To be fair, these things are probably handled by some anonymous sub-contractors...which makes the RAM theft more likely
