Second talk this afternoon, Beyond Urbanisation: deregulation in Aotearoa's transport sector.

"The super rich pay an average tax rate of 8.9% income tax. The average person pays 26%"

"In 2013 Watties paid $2m to management fees. In 2023 that went to $33m, with $50m less revenue. They didn't mention that in decision to close their factories. "

"Transport was a public good for many years in this country. The building of the rail network was part of our nation building... we didn't do it in the nicest way. We made specific rules to protect that, including prohibiting what goods could be moved by road.

This was a public good, until the neoliberal rupture, when price became the dominate organising factor. Rail network privatised, collapsed and brought back in."

"The Uber model is the far swing of that neoliberal pendulum swing. Managers are replaced by an algorithm. It's almost like the rules don't apply, a perfect free market model."

@Phil_Tanner What an amazing event. Thank you for posting about it. Some of those really hit home hard.
Sounds like it would have done the country good for everyone to have heard the talks.

This talk is fascinating, but deep in history and dates and detail... I can't live toot it and listen. Arohamai whānau

So, after a full day yesterday (0900-1730) of 150-200 odd people in the lecture theatre, this was the reading at the end, as the last speaker was receiving their koha.

For those not as familiar with the readings, it was 518 outside just now, so this is basically "fresh air". My (big, government) office NEVER falls below 850, and meeting rooms often climb to over 2000 inside 20 mins.

A packed peak time commuter train on recirculated air is about 1600.

                                          So this is AMAZING.
