    @cstross I am beyond surprised. MT is, from what I've seen, not the most open minded state in the union. Happy to see this, perhaps a ray of hope.

        @retech @cstross

        Montana is a pretty chill place honestly, I think the most problematic types of people you'll meet there are wealthy transplants who go in and buy a bunch of land to develop or whatever.

        After college I hitched through Montana and everywhere I landed people were pretty kind and fair. Particularly compared to some other states. Someone from Montana might have more nuanced opinion though.

          @contrasocial @cstross I may be biased from the areas I hit. But, I do think the last 10yrs have seen a lot of areas show some pretty divisive politics in surprising ways. I'd have never thought it possible in both the area I grew up and where I currently live. I've learned to avoid a lot of topics and skirt a great deal of questions.

                        @kkarhan @cstross for that to happen, it would have to be a violation of the federal constitution, which is an unlikely finding. Just like some states permitted gay marriage before it was legal everywhere by the supreme court ruling.

                          @cstross I keep saying, Montana was a purple state until the national Democratic party walked away because it didn't have enough House seats to interest them.

                          When I moved here over a decade ago, our Congressional delegation was split. Now, it's entirely Republican, BUT two of them aren't running this year. Like other Republicans, they're fleeing the Blue wave.

                          My State House delegate here is trans.

                              @kkarhan @cstross that's just how our system can work. There are limits as to what each part can force the other parts to do.
