    Douglas Adams talked about the ‘shoe event horizon’, where a society becomes so depressed and degenerate that it is economically impossible to build anything but shoe shops.

    These are the shops on our road. A tattoo parlour is surrounded by a barber (closed down), a barber (opening), a hair salon, a hair salon and a hair salon. Opposite this picture is a hair salons. The next block of shops has three hair salons, and there are two hair salons on the next street.

    @lordof1
    Now we have dropped to the level where we can't even build shoe shops.

      @lordof1

      The UK is full of Barber shops cafe's and nail bars, mostly because Maggie Thatcher destroyed our big industries in a fit of spite aimed at the Trade Unions, and the stupid UK voters loved her for it.

          @lyndamerry484 @lordof1 ironically, I've been unable to buy shoes lately because roughly 145% of the shops nearby only sell overpriced food

            @lordof1 i've heard it suggested here that, like nail parlors and american sweet shops, the hair places are often fronts for money laundering.

            @fishidwardrobe @lordof1 yeah this is definitely what's going on, a place that offers a service rather than products can cook the books much more easily

              @lordof1

              Local authorities should buy up shops, designate them as greengrocer or butcher and invite tenders to run them.

                  @lordof1 I used to work in Twickenham and our high street was exactly the same - hairdressers everywhere.

                  I think things are changing now, tho; it's vape shops instead of hairdressers in most places now.

                  Britain's 'vape capital' has more than 50 shops lining two streets

                  Cheetham Hill in Manchester is home to 54 vape shops, much to the dismay of locals who are worried the businesses aren't legitimate.

                  @davidnjoku @lordof1 (in Canada) cellular services are so profitable that a mall near me is roughly 30% stores calling the services of the 3 providers. It’s wild watching them open entire retail storefronts for their own subrands to “compete”

                    @lordof1 It's like a slightly more upscale version of having countless vape stores.

                            @auxonic We have quite a few of those sores here, too. Lots of them double up as vape shops too. And, weirdly, they also sell fake Labubus.
