Douglas Adams talked about the ‘shoe event horizon’, where a society becomes so depressed and degenerate that it is economically impossible to build anything but shoe shops.

These are the shops on our road. A tattoo parlour is surrounded by a barber (closed down), a barber (opening), a hair salon, a hair salon and a hair salon. Opposite this picture is a hair salons. The next block of shops has three hair salons, and there are two hair salons on the next street.

@lordof1 As the owner of a nightclub, I have often said that my dream neighbors would be Auto Glass, Locksmith and Tattooist, because those discourage the Undesirables from colonizing my neighborhood.

@lordof1 30 years ago was walking round Xi'an and we found ourselves on a street not of hair salons but of shops that sold hood dryers for hair salons. That felt like a glitch in the matrix, why so many, so specialised.

            @lordof1
There was a certain road of shops near where I went to school, which, when amazon opened business almost died out.

Shops closed and were replaced by low cost bakeries or cell phone shops.

Today, nearly thirty years later, it seems variety comes back.

@lordof1 A shoe shop requires some manufacturing capacity unless the shoes are imported. In really bad times you will only see services shops, such as the hair parlours, nail parlours and tatoo shops.

@lordof1 He was right, if the wrong type of shop. There are a certain set of shops that so often fit together.

And we have the same around us.

@lordof1 I live in a pedestrian street in a downtown area. There used to be a wide variety of shops. Now it's shoes, clothing, cafés, hairstylists, and optometrists. Everything else has been killed by Amazon.

@lordof1 I used to work in Twickenham and our high street was exactly the same - hairdressers everywhere.

I think things are changing now, tho; it's vape shops instead of hairdressers in most places now.

Britain's 'vape capital' has more than 50 shops lining two streets

Cheetham Hill in Manchester is home to 54 vape shops, much to the dismay of locals who are worried the businesses aren't legitimate.

@lordof1 i've heard it suggested here that, like nail parlors and american sweet shops, the hair places are often fronts for money laundering.

@lordof1 We have a thriving high street near us in a sought after area, and it's almost all coffee shops, bars and beauty salons of some sort*. All the things you can't buy online.

*There is a post office, a couple of mini supermarkets, a gift shop and a couple of charity shops. But it's majorly hospitality and beauty.

@lordof1 my town is the same. The barber shops are like weeds, popping up everywhere. Whenever a shop closes it's guaranteed that the next thing it will be is a barber shop or a hair salon.

@lordof1 A great variety of enterprises covered up by hair salons. Is it warm inside? The neighbours are growing cannabis.
