#hampshirecollege was where I studied cognitive science, art, and education as part of a single magnum opus.
I got to make art about ALife. I got to learn about Jean Piaget and how humans learn through play.
I got to play roleplaying games with Rod Roddenberry.
I got to stay up for days on end working on software just to see what software could do.

It was supposed to be pedagogical R&D, the cutting edge of how young adults learn to become wise and effective stewards of the world.It was to be supported by Amherst, Mt. Holyoke, Smith, and UMass’s budgets, so they could take what Hampshire learned and develop their programs with those lessons.

The other four schools recoiled from the results (feed students with ways to learn and they will find whole new ways of knowledge and wisdom in partnership with faculty) and the responsibility (it was on the chopping block from day 1 as a financial loss).
To this day, the other schools take only the weakest misreadings of the school’s educational processes. The ones that are easiest to just buy from educational suppliers without affecting the actual process of learning.
