      @Ashedryden if you have trouble localizing high pitches it sometimes helps if you turn your head axially sideways, so you can also determine if the sound is coming from above or below

      once you have a general direction you can localize much more rapidly

          @Ashedryden I was literally trying to figure out why my display made the high pitched whine noise. I bought a new power supply (which the old one was buzzing and the new one isn't) but that wasn't the source of the noise. turns out the monitor only makes that noise when the brightness is around 80%.

          @Jes @Ashedryden they still do that? I thought it stopped with the demise of CRT monitors

              @Ashedryden very little worse than a floor fan in the initial stages of bearing failure

                @GuillaumeRossolini @Ashedryden I could guess it's coil wine from PWM of the display brightness or something
                It's the only monitor I've ever heard doing that
                tbf it's not a particularly high end monitor. it may be a 1440p freesync compatible 170Hz, but it's still a VA panel.

                  @Ashedryden It's usually a monitor or television everyone thinks is turned off BUT ISN'T.

                    @Ashedryden my neighbours had a malfunctioning (supposedly, I think it's just how they are) cat scarier and every time I went in our garden as a child for AGES that shit drove me mad

                    My parents couldn't hear it

                    Finally a friend was over and asked what the noise was.

                    Vindicated. Shit like that shouldn't exist.

                      @Ashedryden likely culprits:

                      * phone charger (unconnected to any phone)
                      * external PSUs for other electronic devices

                            Bonus: it's two different high pitched sounds, each of us noticed a different one

                              @Ashedryden When I was little (<10) I couldn’t go into museums due to the security systems high pitched whines. Now, after teenage and college years spent going to rock concerts, loud bars, and 30+ years working in power plants. I still hear a high pitched whine, but now it’s just tinnitus
