@superbetsy I can relate to that sign.
No wheel was lost! The front wheel just turned 90 degrees because of the tram rail, with more force than the handlebar was tightened. I get that if it hasn't happened to you (yet), you might not recognize the sign.
-
@superbetsy It's a warning there's train/streetcar/something tracks in the pavement whose gaps are wide enough to catch a bike tire (if you hit it wrong and it wrenches your front tire sideways).
This happened to my wife one time many years ago: she flew off and landed helmet first (thank goodness for helmets!) and got a bunch of scrapes and a really nasty black eye. For a week or so every time we were in public - starting with the nurses at the ER - I got the worst looks from people making unfortunate assumptions about the cause of said black eye. But she was ok.
@gregtitus @superbetsy Yes.
We are taught to make sure to cross tracks perpendicularly. They can be SUPER SLIPPERY too so it's not a "wrench" from a gap, but a slide-out from wet slimy metal. I wasn't goin' fast so I was ok... -

Yep. Tram tracks can mess you up, with the slightest inattention or distraction.

@superbetsy To me, it's a reminder. If it isn't a unicycle, don't ride it like one, because you'll end up bleeding out the head and ass.

i'm a cyclist, and i find these signs to be utterly hilarious
even though i have ridden over train tracks in extremely snowy weather and gone down like a sack of bricks
(i know this sign is about getting your wheel caught, not slippery when wet, just sayin i've busted my ass on tracks before) -- still hilarious

@superbetsy
Bicycles get raptured along with their riders?

@superbetsy I do not recognize the sign from anywhere at all but SOMEHOW I recognize the very specific fall it's depicting.
There is a tram laid out over the street pavement. The front wheel gets stuck in the tram tracks. The wheel is stuck really tough. Enough to twist the bike handle and rip it off of your hands and spin it violently against your elbows or ribs. Finally the bike topples with that twist and you fall face first to the concrete, your arms too numb to raise in front of you.

@superbetsy It happens, a friend and I were racing each on our bikes to get ice cream after class and he hit a divot in the road. He did a 180 flip in the air and landed on his shoulder and broke his collar bone.
-
@superbetsy don't turn sharply because instead of just falling off your bike your front tire will catch in the grooves of the road and you will be launched head first into the pavement?... i'm guessing?? looks like thats supposed to be a tire that got turned into a groove almost..
how many times has it happened for it to become a sign?! +_+@dumdumdelish @superbetsy It's for tram tracks. They are a hazard to bikes as the wheel gets stuck in the groove.
It's not a very good sign though. Looks like there is no front wheel on the bike, which does indeed make it a bit dangerous.

@superbetsy I think the cyclist depicted on that sign is Trump - judging by the hair and cankles.

At least that one has the red triangle - if it's a condition where you may be ejected completely from your vehicle, at least a red triangle please -

@superbetsy Reminds me of when I was a kid and ran directly into an end of road fence with my motorcycle. Same result.

I've done this maneuver by trying to go through a pot hole instead of around, it hurts! Broke two of my front teeth and had to have some surgery done. -

@superbetsy I bet they have street car rails.

-
@superbetsy Crossing tracks improperly may lead to involuntary Superman. Be warned.
But for reals that’s a GREAT sign.
@wklj @superbetsy Not all heroes wear scrapes

Can't say I've ever come across that format of road signage.

@Simplicator @superbetsy not kidding: “Superman” and “Yard Sale” are common lingo for cycling crashes. The latter being such a tumble everything flies out of your pockets. It’s all over the grass like a yard sale
