Like, I'm sorry, but parents have *responsibilities to* kids, not *rights over* kids. Kids aren't property, they're living, breathing *people* who deserve care and love and privacy and dignity.

Like, I'm sorry, but parents have *responsibilities to* kids, not *rights over* kids. Kids aren't property, they're living, breathing *people* who deserve care and love and privacy and dignity.
@xgranade For a philosophy of control, however, they are the perfect targets. And they can't speak for themselves cos no one ever allows them to. But if they treat their own kids like this no wonder the foreign kids are made to dig things out of the ground with their bare hands to service the West.

@Black_Flag Yep. There's also things like that kids haven't finished developing, almost by definition, and do some absolutely terribly ill-advised shit as a result. Making some choices on behalf of kids is part of respecting them and keeping them safe, so it's easy for authoritarians to slip truly heinous shit into that cultural space without setting off alarm bells.
Being critical and approaching things in terms of how to respect kids' rights first and foremost is the key, I think.

@Black_Flag Like, if you approach issues in terms of that kids are independent people with independent rights whom parents and the rest of society have a responsibility to, then it's much easier to navigate things without authoritarianism.
But too many parents *want* to be authoritarian, and as you point out, there's very little room for kids to fight back as compared with other marginalized groups.

@xgranade Kids are in these times literally people who have no rights... even whilst it is claimed they do have them. But if you can't fight for a right yourself, in your own way and according to your own desire but must have someone do it for you then that is just empty words. The truth is kids are examples of what the authoritarians would prefer us all to be: powerless and obedient or else.

@xgranade so glad my teen turned 18 last month before this kind of stuff really landed, but it's awful for parents and kids and everyone else.

@xgranade the only "parents' rights" I support are the rights to raise their kids and meet those kids' needs, like healthcare for example. But no no, not *those* rights, they just mean the "right" to abuse children
