    @haubles I am confused , I didn’t hear any one allude to Mastodon staff taking this persons side.

    Don’t know if anything had to be said. He’s just like every other social media leach. I wasn’t taking to be anything official.

    Maybe I missed something

      @64bithero the person in question is on the Mastodon advisory board, if I've understood things correctly.

        @eobet I understand. Looking over their resume and seeing how they currently spend their time and make their living I think there a poor candidate to be involved with Mastodon

          @haubles I understand this disclaimer, but i do think apologizing is a little strange. You guys didn't do anything. At no point did I think Scott's opinions represented Mastodon as an org, nor do I get that impression from his profile. It might be prudent to require a "Opinions not endorsed by employer" blurb in Masto employee bios though.

          I just hope this doesn't get him fired. Seems some people want to make a bigger deal out of this then it should be, imo.

            Just get him to stop digging the hole he's in if you can. I think he had good intent hiding in there (though I'm not sure what that message was) but he seems to be lacking the self awareness to see he might be part of the problem he's trying to describe.

                  @64bithero

                  Yeah two persons directed complaints towards the Mastodon team, outright lying about Scott's posts, which @haubles then took seriously.

                  One of them being such a person that Scott's posts were about - someone who walks into people's mentions spewing hate.

                        Scott found it problematic that some people on Mastodon pour hate in people's mentions instead of using block/mute.

                        The ones who want to pour hate didn't like that.

                          @haubles I think the broader issue is the metrics journalists are used to versus what they can get here.

                          I think that gets lost in trying to get people onto Mastodon.

                          If people are here for metrics related to clicks and views, I don't think they understand Mastodon...

                          Or the implicit faustian bargain they are unknowingly propagating because they don't have other metrics.

                          This is not apples and oranges.

                          This is apples and Mastodons. 🙃

                            @haubles I found it most fascinating that he kept talking about a "bigger tent", and didn't even engage the argument that mastodon simply is NOT a single tent, neither big nor small.
                            It is a campground with many tents of varying sizes, each on with own rules and community.

                            He also completely disregards the fact that many people came to mastodon specifically to escape the relentless onslaught of AI (content and functions) being forced into literally every other platform.

                              Scott seemed to be in a quite emotionally volatile place and often not responding with clarity and understanding to folks with criticisms or different points of view.

                              And also not responding to abusive shit posters by ignoring and/or blocking.

                                      @haubles I think that the level of harassment on mastodon and the fediverse in general needs to be looked at. but yeah this was a disastrous microphone fumble and I'm glad to see this being addressed

                                        The views expressed by Scott in this thread do not reflect the opinions of the Mastodon core team or organisation. We're addressing this internally. I'm sorry everyone

                                        @haubles

                                        What kind of journalist calls himself “carnage4life”?

                                        When I was a kid, journalists had names like “Peter Jennings”, their shows had names like “World News Tonight”, and they didn't whine about their viewers not fawning sufficiently.

                                        Maybe my glasses are rose-tinted, but I miss when most adults did their jobs with competence and professionalism.

                                          @knowprose @haubles

                                          I used to be involved with pirate radio in my country (and still do some work for a community radio station which has both normal transmitter and online streaming).

                                          Before streaming radio you had 0 idea how many people were listening - whilst it was possible to interact with the station via pagers and later mobile phones, many of the listeners would be young and still at family home or without much money, and until late 90s it cost a lot to call a pager or mobile phone.

                                          But people *still* kept the stations going without "metrics" (although you would often get randoms come up to you at raves and say in person at raves that they listened to the station).- and this was the case for many creative endeavours well into the 2000s...
