’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech.

@sebastian @Flatus Thanks for the tip. I did browse around in NextCloud's solutions but couldn't see a simple off-the-shelf one for a non-tech person like me who just wants it to plug-and-play work. I've been waiting to see Tuta's drive. Then the DanmarkSkifter campaign nudged to me to stop faffing around - get off OneDrive now, get the photos backed up, then pick the right cloud solution after that. Otherwise I'll never take that final step.
-
@lassegismo There does seem to be a momentum at the moment to just get away from US tech as quickly as possible
-
Before I could pick my 2026 goal for #DanmarkSkifter, I did a digital status. I was mildly surprised when I saw my 2025 digital changes together. I looked at the list and thought: ’Tell me you hang out in the Fediverse without telling me you hang out in the Fediverse.’
From Outlook to Tuta
From Office to Libre
From MS Authenticator to Ente Authenticator
From Google Play to F-Droid
From Spotify to AntennaPod
From Firefox to Vivaldi
From DuckDuckGo to NoAIDuckDuckGo
And I bought a back-up drive.@CiaraNi noiaduckduckgo. Den kendte jeg ikke! Tak for tippet!

-
@sebastian @Flatus Agreed. I was pleasantly surprised at how relatively inexpensive a very large back-drive was. And doing manual back-ups and removing my too-large photo archive from the cloud manually has forced me into better habits, making me think about what I keep and what I delete. (For years, I was blissfully unaware of the environmental cost of digital storage.)

@metteh Jeg tror, jeg selv hørte om noAI-Duck i første omgang her på Mastodon. Det var befriende at flytte over til!

’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.
@CiaraNi I am thinking of switching the family from Google calender to Tuta calender, as I already use Tuta mail. We use gcal to coordinate our days, so it really has to work. Do you have experience with a shared Tuta Calender?

@Orewoet Sorry, no, I haven't used it as a shared calendar. Maybe someone else here in the Fediverse has - I'd be interested to hear myself.

Habits hold us back. Network effects bind us to the same platforms as everyone else. This only changes if we shift collectively. When we shift together, new habits become easier to maintain.
When enough of us shift simultaneously, alternative platforms gain the critical mass they need. When we act collectively, change is possible.”

@CiaraNi Unfortunately, it's not only habits, for some switching you need a computer literacy that many people don't have. And many are alone with that problem. So we also need helping structures, independent from families.

@leanderlindahl @metteh Ah! Godt at vide. Tak. Dem må jeg undersøge. Jeg håber, de har en noAI-udgave - det har været den afgørende fantastisk med noAI-Duck.

-
@leanderlindahl @metteh Det lyder lovende. Hvis man kan slukke for AI via én knap, så er det allerede bedre end Big Tech-udgavene.

@Bodo Interesting. That sounds effective. I must look at that. Thanks for the tip.
@CiaraNi You are welcome!!!

@mkj Good points. Once I got the back-up external drive, I instantly felt less pressured about finding a new cloud provider. I've started the process, and it doesn't feel as overwhelming as if I had to try and get everything out of one locked-in cloud and into a new, unfamiliar one overnight. 'Something' better than 'nothing' - yes, that strategy works for me.
