To be fair to the workmen they also repointed all of the bricks ... so it was a whole thing.
I handn't heard of "repointing bricks" before.
I can see that taking longer than stripping the roof off a wood frame building and replacing it.
Though two years still sounds pretty ridiculous.
Unless they had to keep waiting for something to dry?

The frame isn't wood. It's steal beams. This is a huge apartment tower and I'm like 8 stories up.
They had to remove the old tar, lay a new bed, then shingles, then paint then more layers.
We still need to put the decks back.

I am basically an independent homesteader now.

Congrats! I'd love to do that someday (right now, I couldn't grow weeds if I tried! But my husband and I keep at it) -

I assume they just ate the roof worker's lunches for the past two years? I was just getting sad that they were gone when one of them emerged from their old hole to find out who was digging in "their" soil.
I wonder how many species of ants I can accumulate in this roof garden? If I make enough little niches and habitats I think I could get all of the major common ants of NYC living up here (although I will not bring Lasius emarginatus up here on purpose, they are spreading enough on their own. They will show up I bet.)
But maybe I can get some of the more obscure species too.
This may look like a garden for plants but really it's a garden for ANTS.
An ant garden ... a source of infinite joy!

@futurebird I'd recommend quails instead of chickens for your rooftop homesteading future

Technically pigeons would be more traditional, but IDK if the city is ready for me to bring back the "bird post"... though I always did dream of a pigeon-based ultra slow internet...

@futurebird I was just thinking, if you're planning to raise some for eggs - quails are easier to care for/house. I've had both before

@futurebird I don't know if you know, but it already has been tried, and stuff like microSDs sent by pigeon don't have that bad bandwidth...
