Planted my roofgarden today.

Planted my roofgarden today. No more grocery store for us! This garden will feed twos of people for several hours, perhaps even a day!
I am basically an independent homesteader now.
(it would be legal for me to have a beehive and chickens up here... someday I will)
@futurebird Wishing you much success!

@futurebird Where we live, in a box nearly identical to that, we find we can grow more lettuce that two people can reasonably eat, or carrots too small for human consumption.
-
@futurebird Looks like there's lots of room for more!
It's one of the things that's overwhelming about the roof. We will add one of these planters each year and see how well we cope with the work.
My husband is not good at weeding because killing plants makes him sad? (where did I find him???)

@futurebird Growing your own food is ineffecient as hell but it is good for the soul
I've got plans for a couple of espalier fruit trees on the south side of my garage ( in Ontario ) so I will join you in the mutual admiration society real soon now. -
@GlasWolf @futurebird That's not counting the ants, right?

@futurebird Heck yeah! My mom and I put together a raised garden bed in our back yard (the soil we have natively isn't very fertile) and we're thinking about saving up for a second one too.

@futurebird yes autonomy!

Carrots, onions and beans. Carrots do well if you get the right kind.

@futurebird I think you're going to have to wait awhile before you reach the "several hours" threshold.

Due to our roof being fixed I have not been able to garden for TWO YEARS. But now they are done and it's time to grow food again. Our chives survived the construction but not much else (not even the strawberries)
There was a colony of ants in one pot that I would feed and I was delighted to find that they made it too!
I'm fairly certain it's the same colony since they live in the hollow space of a plastic pot. I will need to plant more strawberries for them as those were their favorite.

I assume they just ate the roof worker's lunches for the past two years? I was just getting sad that they were gone when one of them emerged from their old hole to find out who was digging in "their" soil.

We have chives ready to go. Would you like ... a very small "chive salad" ?

No. It's not needed up here.

How does it take 2 years to fix a roof?

@futurebird though I live in the country with lots of land, many bazillions of plants and a big garden, I have always dreamed of a rooftop garden in NYC
