@titia I took one close to Frankfurt Süd. I always filter only ones that have score 8 or higher on Booking... that should keep me away from the worst ones.

@tml Sounds like you made a good choice! Near the Süd station, the Schweitzer Strasse and Schweitzer Platz are quite nice for a stroll, a kind of "Little Paris".

@tml @titia Why is high score an indication of a place to avoid?

      🤔

Had booked a seat on the mandatory reservation non-stop TER to Paris at 10:05, but I arrived on schedule in Caen already at 08:49 and the 09:04 one was right across the platform waiting, so I booked a seat on that instead. Even got the other ticket refunded (from RailEurope), excellent. (Just €2.50, but still.)

For a TER, this is an excellent train. Has 1st class, runs 238 km non-stop. Not very hight average speed, just 119 km/h, but the line is quite curvy.

I was not looking forward to a warm and crowded Métro ride, but actually, I have lots of time, and it is only a few kilometres, so I am walking from Gare St Lazare to Gare de l’Est. Then I can enjoy typical Parisian streetscapes and have lunch in some random nice restaurant inbetween.

Confit de canard and crème brûlée. Very French? And to top it off, a Saint-Germain spritz. (Probably a very touristy thing to drink a such after lunch, but that’s what I am.)

@tml yeah, the Omneo Premiums have pretty comfortable seats by modern standards. I was pleasantly surprised in Nice because I was dreading the death of the corails.

shame about the daft compulsory reservation though...

Now in the ICE to Frankfurt. Let’s hope the French keep their high-speed lines in better condition than the Spaniards.

Had not heard of Saint-Germain Spritz before but had it in a (gay) bar in Brussels (I am not, I probably should say, but such often have the most pleasant music and atmosphere) during FOSDEM. Was good.

Approaching Kehl. "Customs officers will be passing through the train for passport control"

I don't think so. Surely it is the Bundespolizei and not Zoll? Anyway, sad.
