    I tried to introduce my son, Alex, to programming when he was young. He wasn’t interested. But he eventually found his way to it on his own. By the time Alex graduated high school, he had put his first app into the App Store.

    Now, after 4 years at WPI, Alex has a BS in Computer Science and a Master’s in Data Science, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA. (Yes, he received the maximum possible grade in every undergraduate and graduate class he took in all 4 years!)

    We are immensely proud of him! ❤️

      Also on my mind: my son may be part of the last generation of programmers to have learned to program in the days before LLMs.

      @siracusa talked to a friend’s kid last weekend who is in his second year of CS, asked him his take and he said “we’re all just studying security super hard as that seems likely to be the last thing to go”, which struck me as pretty insightful for 19.

            @tba @siracusa That’s the internal job site, not the public one.

            Try this:

            Apply for a Software Engineer in Test, Cocoa job at Apple. Read about the role and find out if it’s right for you.

                        Apple folks: Alex has been applying to open positions at Apple, and he is willing relocate to California. But so far, he hasn’t gotten any sort of response. If you want a smart, dedicated developer who’s a fast learner, please check out his resume, which is already in your system!

                        @siracusa I’ve seen a lot of people hired by the fruit company. I’ve seen very few who don’t have a lot of experience. The main exceptions have been people who interned and made a good impression. Dad’s coat-tails may help, though don’t expect that hiring managers are all familiar with the Apple-adjacent independent media milieu. Best hope I would say is do a startup with a sherlockable software product, then wait for them to either acquire or hire him to Sherlock his own product.

                              @siracusa every time I’ve tried to hire in the last few years we’ve gotten absolutely drenched in resumes. Hundreds and hundreds pile up in Greenhouse. Going through them all with any sort of care is impossible. A significant percentage are people just feeding our job description into Claude and having it crap out the perfect resume. It’s demoralizing.

                              That said, if Alex sees anything interesting at https://careers.upstart.com/jobs I’m happy to submit a referral!

                                  @Kubi I’ll have him check it out, but at a glance, I don’t see many positions that don’t require “3+ years experience” or similar. It’s tough out there for a new grad…

                                    @siracusa Rad.

                                    First time I think I can remember reading a Siracusa byline, I was younger than him (circa 2001).

                                        Apple folks: Alex has been applying to open positions at Apple, and he is willing relocate to California. But so far, he hasn’t gotten any sort of response. If you want a smart, dedicated developer who’s a fast learner, please check out his resume, which is already in your system!

                                          @siracusa Congratulations. And if anything goes wrong he’ll always have his tennis to fall back on.
