Just taught my very last day of classes. Got some grading to do, but essentially I am inches from beginning an early retirement (in my 50s).
I'm completely fed up with the teaching of college-level English. The students don't read assigned texts (they have AI summarize), and they use AI to write all their papers. Forget comma splices, they can't even use apostrophes for possessives. Functionally illiterate.
So, I guess you could say that AI took my job.Oh no. Comp classes are my future. I wonder, since I'm kind of coming into teaching as this is unfolding, if I'll end up with the same burnout?

So, I guess you could say that AI took my job.@DrOinOR My former son-in-law taught HS US government for almost 30 years, he was a great teacher and he loved teaching...until he didn't. He was "inches" away from retirement.
A few years ago, during class, he walked out, and didn't return.
Cell phones. Disrespectful students. Disrespectful parents. Disinterested students. Kids who believed education was a waste of their time.
He regrets his actions that day, but not his decision. He lost about 40% of his retirement, but he was finished.

So, I guess you could say that AI took my job.@DrOinOR This was my experience while taking college classes back in 2006. The students within the classes I had to take were dysfunctional at best. I passed all of the general classes with ease, while everyone else was struggling. I wouldn't blame you for walking away.

If it helps, I've been teaching English, through the studies of literature, academic writing, and creative writing, and as a foreign language, for 25 years. So it took awhile to get this burned out, and TBH honest, watching my country descend into a fascist idiocracy while trying to teach dystopian novels hasn't helped.
Stay strong! -

Stay strong! You are describing my exact career plan. Working on my TESOL certification right now, in fact. Waiting to hear from grad school about funding for my master's.
I feel like there's going to be a breaking point. I really hope it's soon. -

Sadly, I need to find another job. Checked my accumulated pension yesterday and currently my annual return would cover living expenses for about 2 months!
