It had been installed at some considerable expense when instruments like this were not common and fishermen would check it before committing to go out in their small boats. It was a potentially life-saving instrument for them.

My grandparents house has one, from what I can tell it does seem to work pretty well! Quite useful knowing whether it will rain a few hours in advance on the farm.
