New award announced: "Nominations are now open for the [FORMER ASSOCIATE DEAN'S NAME REDACTED] Leadership Award, which recognizes a faculty leader in the [INSTITUTION REDACTED] who has advanced the success of women in our community."

Many years ago I was at a career crossroads, and succumbed to pressure from respected mentors to apply for a mid-level administrative position. That experience prompted an irrevocable U-turn away from that path and permanently back to teaching.

Among many other repellent revelations during the process of interviewing and turning down the offer, was the session with this former associate dean—for, ahem, "operations"—one of wayyy too many administrators to whom I would report.

She started the interview by making very plain, very crudely plain, that the first thing she wanted me to do in that position was to fire a bunch of women.
