Can you write in cursive?

@futurebird I sometimes prefer cursive even.

I'm left-handed and it truly is easier to pull a pen than to push it, so anything that eases the writing process tends to help me.

(Really I ought to just give up and write backwards like DaVinci did to solve the problem.)

@futurebird Again the left-handedness comes into play... It's harder to write in general, so my handwriting definitely suffers and feels awkward.

@futurebird I'd already stopped using cursive in high school, in the 80s. One teacher said my handwriting was beautiful but didn't look like English.

When I took notes as a reporter I often wrote in a half-cursive scrawl that no one but me could read. It was ... pretty bad, actually. My handwriting was never all that great.

I do if it's important, but I'm an old so I can. It's appallingly bad, and I'm kinda phobic about it, having had it beaten into me as a kid.

On the other hand, if I take notes by hand, the action of writing embeds stuff in my brain better than a keyboard.

@futurebird took about thirty years. looks like someone who learned cursive and then decided it was optional — which is accurate. the notes are legible. stopped apologizing for the rest.

@futurebird I write by hand a lot (and yes, cursive). My penmanship isn’t great so I don’t love it, but I do like writing by hand. I always have a pen within reach (ok, several).

@futurebird I learned to appreciate developing my own handwriting from my grand father who was an illustrator and typographist. He always had the most beautiful way of lettering signs in his home and the church he was volunteering in. Some of those signs are still there decades after. I liked to read his letters and started playing around with handwriting early on in my childhood because of it. I would write nonsense and just marvel at the letters. It is my favorite way of doodling.

@futurebird First they taught me how to write print so I did that, then they taught me cursive so I did that, then they taught me to write in block capitals so I did that.

Then I left academia and now I'm stuck writing like a child who never learned about lower case

@futurebird Yes but my handwriting is now terrible because I don't do it often enough due to computing (hell, I struggle to get my signature to look the same twice for the same reason).

For me; this depends on the language.

English and French and Spanish I can do fine.

German and Russian cursive I never learned well enough to read or write. And Japanese and Chinese I have never attempted.

@futurebird I prefer my cursive in Cyrillic over English, because I have bad memories of being forced to overcome terrible writing in English, and Russian was like "new script who this" so it was all good.
