Does Apple still not have any official accounts on Mastodon (or Bluesky)? Are they really still using X as their primary (only?) text-based social media platform? https://www.macrumors.com/2026/02/26/apple-teases-a-big-week-ahead/

@siracusa@mastodon.social How about we forget about the specific companies and just call it the Fediverse?

@fds @siracusa First they should create a presence outside X. Which they did not.
Either they cannot afford handling multiple platforms or they choose to support only X.com.

@al3x They do have the accounts (at least on threads but I. assume it's not active). a one person band manages cross posting so I'm sure they could.

It's definitely a choose to. The kind view is they know Elon will loose his shit and probably start up lawsuits but it is that sort centrist idea of I'm not the bad guy but I’m just trying to keep the peace that allows people like Elon to flourish, imo.

@siracusa It is weird that even their Threads account is vacant.

@ichris @siracusa It’s not, but under Alan Dye’s design direction the text and chrome are all rendered white on white so it doesn’t get in the way of your content.

@siracusa It's weird, right? Not just the "X is bad" part, but also being able to run your own server and self-verify, controlling the message end-to-end, protecting privacy, not beholden to another company, etc. Not even as their only outlet, but at least for crossposting. Every tech company that knows about Mastodon should have their own server.

@marcintosh @siracusa As someone who works for a large tech company, I see that Marketing understands Twitter, et.al. and can use the apps/websites. If they're even _aware_ of Mastodon, self-hosting a Mastodon server becomes •A PROJECT,• coordinated with IT for server space, DNS, eng hours. But who's budget does it come out of? For not just install but ongoing maintenance and patching? (That said, there's nothing stopping them from creating an account on The Big Instance to migrate later.)

@siracusa “Here’s to the crazy ones,” [Dreyfuss] “The misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers — the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.”

»Current Apple CEO Tim Cook, for instance, keeps a copy of one of the original “Think Different” ads in his office.« — perhaps in his back. Or on the underside of the carpet.

It’s now only about the money, not about having the better product. Or at least being kind to people.

Mac user since 1994, but now switching. A brand that kisses the ring of the autocrat and shits on human rights doesn’t need my money.

@ichris @siracusa their Twitter account has always been post-less too if you go to it. Right now it only shows a pinned tweet introducing the latest iPhone.

@siracusa They should be on all platforms as a matter of principle with the implicit understanding that none of them matter except the social formerly known as Twitter, and maybe Threads.

@siracusa I spent some time exploring whether there’s a viable indie business helping orgs that broadcast on X get set up on Mastodon and Bluesky. I focused on state and local public agencies. Alas; the typical mid-size progressive city’s transit department doesn’t even know this is something they should consider.

                      Apple, though? It boggles.

@davepeck @siracusa Stay in touch. I want to spin something up for social or political movements — to the point of being as non-partisan as the ACLU, defending all sides

or support someone else doing it

And then buttress that by doing to online opinions what TLS-PSK does to encryption: build Automated Trust Pyramids for social media accounts, where you can inherit trust score coefficients from other people, or set your own trust scores for people that have earned your trust in real life.

@siracusa I still have wide segments of things I follow that are primarily or only on X - lots of college sports related content, lots of F1 related content, things related to my work, my daughter’s college - some post across platforms but some don’t.

@mpfef98 aren’t there bots for that? I used to know about this … actually there’s one last account I do want to follow, so maybe I should do this myself

@FrChazzz @siracusa it should be as big of a deal for companies as setting up a web server

Or maybe, more to the point, an email server — which has a necessary labyrinth of trust hierarchies these days

(and is a fascinate analogue into what we need to do with individual accounts, as a peer-to-peer “social trust” mechanism)
