@swirly so I don't want to be contrarian about this, but it does make me wonder how their backend works.
I see the storm of servers connecting when I post something too, but they're one layer deep HTML fetches with zero assets pulled in. Even if the entire fediverse would connect, which is about 42k of them, to me it would seem still like it would cause less impact than posting something on a popular account with hundreds of thousands of followers that actually do fetch resources.

@swirly I have about 1200 followers and configured my server to mix timelines with a whole list of relays, so I'm getting definitely a few hundred server hits every time I post a link with something on my infra.. but it's hard to compare to something like 1200 actual users clicking the link and browsing, or something like scrapers or whatever.
That said, more improvements is more better, I don't mind if they some how fix it, I just never really considered it an issue I suppose
