There are some classic dual-receiver, detachable head, 50W VHF/UHF #amateurradio transceivers that were discontinued but live on as clones or heavily inspired tributes

The most famous of these is the Yaesu FT-8900, which has tributes from Anytone and TYT

But I’ve instead settled on the Retevis/Aliunce MA1, a riff on the Kenwood TM-V71A. It’s a basic dual bander but has a good looking display, quirky but nice feeling controls, hand mic jacks on both sides, and works well on CHIRP

The only downside is the secondary button labels are engraved but not painted so I have an afternoon project with white-out or white model paint in my future

Afterword: Anytone makes pretty good stuff at a great price

      BUT

I hate hate hate the feel of the rotary encoders they put on anything they make. They are so stiff that spinning the dial feels like the Wheel of Pain and makes a clicking sound louder than it beeps

@flyingsaceur I've got an anybone ht that is every bit as tough as nails as my moto xts5k. no matter what else ive bought over the years, if i need to carry a radio i always end up going back to the anybone coz its loud and it can survive every calamity.

oddly it's rotary is great but the vol pot is hell on earth. "will i adjust the volume or twist this knob off the pcb?"

in my jeep everything is icom, now. after years of various chinesium uv rigs like you mentioned I just got fed up one day and bought a 2370. at the time the price wasn't all that different than anything else. its killer feature is the remote head.

@macross every once in a while I think I should just bite the bullet and get the IC-7100. But then I start thinking about corner cases

@flyingsaceur I loathe that radio a lot. such limited mounting options due to the clock radio head unit's jaunty angle. If you can get your hands on one, a ic-7000 is sweet as hell.

I use a 7300 for hf in my jeep, along side the 2730 and my ancient original hf mobile solution 706IIG for all-mode u/v and 6m. I drive a wrangler so lots of room overhead where a fabric headliner is not, and no kids so lots of room for the detached chassis etc where the back seat is not.
