At my library's repair cafe as a volunteer.

It's the first time they're running it and they're hoping to do this regularly.

I came in thinking I would help with computer troubleshooting... but they have enough people doing that.

So I figured I could help with Linux OS install... but the local Linux Install Party is here and has enough people.

Then a guy brought in a bicycle! And no one is here doing bike repair. But I brought my allen wrench set and a multitool.

So I just got done running and installing a new bicycle brake line on an older bike. Brake works just fine now!

I'll bring my full set of bike tools next time!

      @tinker

But what Fedi really wants to know:

Were you able to install Linux onto the bicycle?

      Beautiful scene!!!

@RepairCafeFFX Oooh, I thought sewing machine demo was in March. I think I have a conflict in April 😞

@artcollisions That's ok! We can push it out further than April, not to worry. March is the first demo, but the first demo is the Win10 one, since the TJ librarians requested that specifically. Sorry for the confusion

We will find an event that works for your schedule - the info will still be valuable even beyond March. Believe it or not we got ANOTHER sewing machine on Sunday!

@elight - Heck, if you can, go team up with folks who know more about electronics than you and learn from them. Then lend your shoulder for what you are able to do (I imagine you know quite a bit, enough to do some good work!). Most repair booths have more than one person and they all work together to fix things, teaching and sorting through issues together.

And yeah, I am a jack of all trades as well - I think its wonderful!

@tinker I started volunteering at mine too recently - textile repair and sewing in my case. It was one of the most fun days I've had in ages, and it was so great hanging out with fellow hackers and fixers.

@Maker_of_Things - Yeah! We had two folks that just sat a table by the entrance, greeted folks, and then pointed them to the correct table for what they needed. There absolutely is a place for everyone!

There is an awful lot to be said for good meet and greet, and support, volunteers.

It is one reason why Sue and I went from four repair cafes a month down to two. We wanted to reduce our workload, and chose the two that had the best non repair volunteers.
That was a hard decision given we helped set them all up over the last ten years.
