It's very interesting indeed to see Carney standing beside Macron at this "major EU summit”.

@Veza85UE and yet it is an "EU Summit” ;=)
@chris It really, really isn't.
-
@revndm for sure!
@chris it’s kind of a weird idea, which I imagine would create different types of benefits for different countries and that would, IMO, be destabilizing. I’d say just let Canada in if that’s what voters want.
-
@chris some are floating a “different levels” of EU membership idea, which in theory could allow for Canada to join.
@revndm There is no theory under which Canada joins the EU, just like there is no praxis. We're a community of law, our Treaties are supposed to mean something.
(OK, fine, I'm wrong. There IS one: annexation by France, via Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. That would be practicable under EU law, just like the former DDR joined once it disappeared off the map.)

@revndm It's fine if you're Canadian, honestly. Just be aware that there will be grifters and/or morons who will be lying about this topic for attention on twitter, the usual. If you're in Canada those are harder to spot if media fails to do its job and you read stuff like: "German MEP says the term "European state" could be legally flexible" and nobody tells you Streit's a clown from a clown car on fire party. Lots of EUropeans failed by our journalists too.

@revndm They're all chasing the same clicks and all ran with the usual crap from The Economist's "Charlemagne" guy... It's a very Brit media teehee aren't I so clever thing, they live for stuff like this, whereas the more boring minutia of EU law and what the EU *is* at its core is too dull for them. That's the country that had to google "what is the EU" the morning after, so chances are you don't want EU law advice from them.
@chris -
@chris @Veza85UE at the risk of getting barked at again the EU is bureaucratic, aloof, occasionally democratic, frequently high on its own supply, unevenly governed, hypocritical and becoming increasingly irrelevant and has no purpose other than to have meetings about things it has no intention of ever doing properly, the best thing for Canadians is to be outside the EU because paradoxically this is the best way to exist in the EU as then there are no rules
