#English language can be very odd.

#Toast for breakfast this morning prompted a random musing.
We say "toast and marmalade", "toast and jam", but it's "buttered toast". And then there's "marmite on toast" - or cheese, or (shudder) beans on toast. In fact, most combinations seem to be something on toast, rather than toast and something.
