@RosethornRanger the realisation that I had spent the previous 65 years unaware of my autism opened so many doors. Principally it allowed me the relief of understanding clouded of my life, but most telling, it helped to explain why I was "different" and since childhood I had been treated accordingly.

@RosethornRanger This is the truth. Sending ADHDs to doctors in the hope of curing them is almost as bad as sending them to asylums to hide them away. Society must accept, adapt, and accommodate them.

@khleedril @RosethornRanger Eh, medication is still very important for many people and can improve the lives of people with ADHD, for their own sake. There is no "cure" of course.

I didn't get it til I started reading experiences of other women with high functioning autism and went, "oh".

Yes. I’ve heard a lot of audhd friends here say it’s a great relief for them. Seems a bit tricky sometimes to find the best matching one but if it works, it seems to be a help.
And it doesn’t work for everyone, apparently, but that’s not a reason to make those who benefit from it feel bad about it.

That’s exactly why I never went for a „diagnosis“. I don’t need an allistic doctor to tell me I have „deficits“, thank you very much. Nor do I need neurotypicals to explicitly tell me I’m not one of them. They’ve punished me for it all my life, with looks, remarks, and rejection.
It’s the very reason why self-identification is completely valid in the #actuallyAutistic community.

but here in the UK for example, where it costs nothing but time and energy, it's worth considering getting a formal diagnosis. i've found it very freeing. i tell everyone i'm autistic now, because they can't argue…

of course, if there’s some kind of service you need and can access that way, or whatever personal reason anyone might have - I’m just saying why I, very personally, chose not to let anyone assess „officially“ what I know already. Especially given how many of us have been given wrong assessments - including wrong medication for all sorts of diagnoses - for years on end.
