"Kevin O’Leary’s massive data centre and gas plant planned in northwestern Alberta ..

gas-fired power plant will generate roughly the amount of energy used by eight million households in a year, or 15 cities the size of Calgary, setting the province back about 20 years in its emissions reduction efforts..

Alberta regulator dismissed the nearby Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation’s (SLCN) appeal of a water licence for a six-million-cubic-metre annual withdrawal ..

Municipality of Greenview, which so far has spent $70 million on making the area attractive for data centre developers, submitted the water license application..

Alberta’s system is “deliberately bifurcated such that First Nations need to go to court to challenge..

In 2025, Greenview’s council, along with three other nearby counties, declared an agricultural disaster due to drought

Kevin O'Leary pins water licence for $70-billion data centre project on a small Alberta municipality

"municipality must "act as an agent" for O'Leary's company by securing provincial water licences that give the facility access to up to 24 million cubic metres of water annually..

enough water for about 460,000 people over their lifetimes, drawn from a municipality that last year declared an agricultural emergency because of drought..

the municipality is effectively doing the job of a corporation — not a government..

also pins most of the risk of the project falling through on the municipal district, if the Alberta government won't issue the water licences."

Kevin O'Leary's plan to build the "world's largest" data centre at a cost of $70 billion in northern Alberta depends on a deal that lets the celebrity investor walk away from the project if the local government can't secure necessary water licences.

@pinhman In 2024 the same municipality was in enough of a drought to enforce water restrictions

        https://www.dailyheraldtribune.com/news/local-news/valleyview-water-shortage-plan-rainfall

They tried to get federal drought relief funds then but were denied

In 2021 they also declared agricultural disaster due to drought
