A reminder that literal children use git forges like GitHub and Codeberg. It will generally be obvious, because they will use excessive amounts of emojis and emoticons and they'll lol and joke and most of all, they'll have a lot of self doubt.

Do NOT be a dick to them!

If they're failing to do something, politely and kindly help them to do it the right way.

If they have self doubt, explain to them that none of us know what we're doing and remind them that the beauty of FOSS is that you can learn in public and get tips from people from all over the world.

Don't preach that "meritocracy" bullshit at them.

Don't talk about "wasting your time".

    Don't discourage them.

Be nice. You are the adult in the room, and there's a non-zero chance you are a role model to them. Do not crush their spirits. You have a responsibility as a FOSS maintainer to make your project a safe and welcoming space to new comers and that includes kids.

Do not be rude and destroy their dreams like some kind of monster.

@domo@pizza.enby.city this reminds me of when I was first learning bag and I posted a script to a group that literally created and executed a second script to inject cli arts into a curl command, and someone took the time to explain variables to me which was nice

@domo maintainers treating me like an adult online is how i got my first open source contribution actually. maybe we shouldn't treat users differently based upon their assumed age how about that

@domo also excessively weirded out by the insistence that there is a specific form of emotional expression that identifies a child and furthermore is worthy of protection. if you give a shit about not breaking people's dreams, don't fucking do it to anyone, regardless of whether they use fucking emojis
