HBD to Richard Stallman, free software activist and programmer behind GNU Emacs and the GNU Compiler Collection.
In 1983, Stallman launched the GNU Project to build a completely free Unix-like operating system, and in 1985 he founded the Free Software Foundation to advocate for “software freedom” — the idea that users should be able to study, modify, and share the software they rely on.
Today, those principles continue to shape the technologies that power much of the modern internet.
