Bookmarks. Love them, hate them, fancy ones, scrap of paper, fold the corner of the page.

What do you use and why?

I just use an old tram or train ticket as I have never got on with specially made bookmarks.
I have a pile of tickets on the bedside table just to use as bookmarks.

@Maker_of_Things@cupoftea.social I mostly read eBooks these days, but my preferred method was either to remember which chapter I'd got to (no thanks Pterry) or just leave the book open face-down. I'm not one of those 5 books on the go at the same time people.

I voted #2, but instead of a random scrap of paper, I use a very specific scrap of paper. Specifically, I have a huge pile of old multicolored weekly transit passes that I pull from - perfect size, slightly stiff cardboard, kinda retro. I love 'em.

@Maker_of_Things I've currently got several card bookmarks, so I'm using them. I'm quite fond of one from a bookshop in Canada that came along in a second hand copy of Annihilation, along with the actual receipt from the shop from when it was bought. I wonder how it ended up here in the north east of England. Bought on holiday? Brought over by a Canadian moving here?

I couldn't do face down.
Paperbacks would sometimes lift up and lose the page, unless the backs were broken. And they take up too much space.

That's a cool find as a bookmark.

I browsed a secondhand book stall in Manchester and recognised a book title. I picked it up and found it still had my tram ticket in it, years after I gave it to a charity shop!
I took the ticket and put the book back.

@Maker_of_Things As for the why, I'm not super fussy about not turning corners down, especially in paperbacks, if it's a hardback, or even just an especially nice paperback edition, I'll try to keep it nice.

Attached: 1 image Found this in a second-hand book I started reading this morning, presumably from one of those tear off one page a day desk calendars. I had a little smile at the comic, and then noticed the date it was from and had to grimace a bit. Everything was about to change. Be like Linus. Enjoy what you've got while you've got it, because it can be taken away sooner than you expected.

@Maker_of_Things I said random/scrap, but I also have specially home made ones and ones that came with books. I never know exactly when I'm going to start reading, so most often it'll be anything within reach and then change it later.

@Maker_of_Things I said Random paper, but usually it's a post-it note. I've found that if I use them as intended, they can make the page sticky if I don't come back to the book until some time has passed. I therefore fold the post-it in half, so the sticky bit sticks to itself and I have a neat little bookmark.

@Maker_of_Things for a while, every time I brought a handful of dollar bills back from the US because I don't like using cash and so my smaller change never got used, I'd put them aside and use those as bookmarks.

I have mostly switched to an e-reader for the last decade or so, and the US has gotten much more cashless-friendly, but I still have a few tucked away for when I need them.

@Maker_of_Things I have *some* specially made bookmarks but mostly use random bits of paper, or when it's a book reserved from the library the reservation slip. (Or the previous person's reservation slip, which can be interesting if the book has to come from a different library than mine)

A post-it note makes a good bookmark, because you can stick it onto the back of the book while you're reading, and it generally doesn't fall off or get in the way.

When I was a kid, turning the corner was usual, until I found some corners stayed turned and there could be a few turned corners to confuse me.

Then I got told off for it by someone, so I stopped.

Yes, my 'anything' is more likely to be a shop receipt or a business card, until I go to get a tram ticket.
