"I keep hearing AI advocates say that the universal deployment of AI will create a “productivity explosion” and “unprecedented wealth creation” and will “end poverty.” All I want to know is: How? How will the money made by the big AI companies end up in the pockets of the poor? I’m not even asking for a plausible scenario — I’d be happy to see any scenario at all, anything more than “THEN A MIRACLE OCCURS.”"

@mike indeed – if they are successful at hollowing out the entire professional class, it’s not like the newly-laid off are going to have an easy time starting their own businesses using software rented from those same companies, especially when the plagiarism machine is right there to clone anything new they build. The limiting factor for LLMs is your ability to measure success and it’s much easier to copy someone else’s design after it’s been proven.

@mike I don't really understand why we listen to tech advocates any more at this point? They have no credibility. It's like when Elon Musk promises something, at this point, its like an anti-promise.

The structure of big tech promises has time and again revealed to be propaganda to cover their own anti-social ends, typically, accruing profits at the expense of everyone else.

@mike The end poverty claims are anesthesia, pure and simple. If the will/morality to provide UBI existed, it would be in place already.

If AI replaces human workers at scale, the result will be fewer people who can work and fewer people who can buy things. The solution won’t be UBI, it will be allowing those who can’t buy things to die off. Talk of ending poverty is there to distract while this future is put into place.

I’m not saying AI will actually accomplish this; my best guess is that AI replacement will backfire spectacularly and we’ll spend years unwinding the technical debt. But I do believe that’s the way tech execs are thinking. For example:

The Epstein files expose how racial hierarchy, genetic “optimisation” and even climate-driven population culling circulated inside Big Tech circles

@mike maybe like how we got more time off after machines were invented to do a lot of manual labour

That did involve a couple of world wars, and a union movement...

(and the unions were largely crushed in the USA)
