A few weeks ago, I created this #mastodon instance fraxoweb.social
And I'd also like to create more federated instances with open registrations:
- #matrix
- #peertube
- #pixelfed
- #flohmarkt
- etc.But I don't really like promoting/advertising my stuff, and nobody joined so far.
I'm wondering if I should actively promoting it, even if I don't like it.
In a way, nobody will join any instance, if nobody know they exist.
Or maybe I'm just wasting of time and money.

@frank Community building is tough.

@frank
For peertube, add your own videos and them link to them here - I know this is easier said than done, as I've got an instance, and I've only got a few videos in there myself. Still, you have to start somewhere, and you will learn things on the way
I also have a flohmarkt instance. I did try and promote it to my local area on mastodon, but nobody joined yet. Still, it's a handy place to put my useful but not expensive (and not work paying ebay fees) items that I want to get rid of.
Maybe try appealing to your specific local area, or a specific topic that other instances don't cater for.
I have an overly-resourced mastodon server too, and I only have 7 users and 2 Bots, which is a lot of infrastructure, for few users, but again, I learnt loads, and I enjoy it.
Best wishes

Thanks for the tips, really appreciate it.
I already have a peertube and a quick solo flohmarkt that I built as a test.
But I don't trust my current infrastucture enough for other people to join.
To have a better infrastucture, I would need to invest a bit of money.
Not sure if it's worth the shot though lol

@frank You're welcome.
Fair enough. depending on what you run it on, it can cost a lot.
I'm running mine on an old rack-mount server (Dell R620), which is more than adequate, but it was free from a friend.Buying big 2.5" drives for it was the expensive part
although my server isn't particularly efficient either, so my electricity costs aren't as low as if I had used newer hardware.I could be more efficient by using fewer relays, which would use less disk space, especially now that >v4.4 implements "fetch missing replies", but it's ok.
I expect my bigger drives will last me a couple of years before I need to worry about clearing cached content from remote systems.Even most of my supposed technical friends don't seem to be interested in "The Fediverse", which is frustrating, and has resulted in fewer users on my system than I was expecting.

That's really cool. In my case, I use VPS and S3-compatible storage.
I currently use Yunohost to self-host my personal stuff, which is perfectly fine. But I don't trust it enough to start hosting for other people.
For that, I would like to upgrade to Cloudron, which is more professional, but has a cost.
Also, I'd prefer using root domain names instead of subdomains because it just looks better and professional. But again buying domain names has a higher cost.

@frank Cool. I've never tried that myself.
Fair enough.
Yes, quite, I'm just using a subdomain from my IT contracting company domain so it's not costing me anything extra, but doesn't look amazing.
Still, I was just playing at the time, and wasn't sure if I was going to run it long term....Depending on your TLDN needs, you can get one between £5-20/year
