I heard last week that the physics teacher of the daughter of one of my colleagues told the daughter that girls who do their nails don’t do physics. Sigh.

So, here are the nails of an internationally leading particle physics professor. My nails.

@freyablekman amazing. I was hoping such stories were only from last millennium... Keep posting as I am afraid we're sliding back atm.

(As a white male I also have and had a vested interested in the benefits of equality and diversity, now even more as my daughters are almost going to college)

@jeroen interesting enough ther is some research that says college (if you mean college as 18+, I realise it changes per culture) is too late and the brainwashing happens much much earlier (12-14 ish). I hope your daughters get to do what sparks their interests and are not discouraged by stereotyping teachers !

@freyablekman I was also particularly moved to be at the birthplace of the web. This has always been part of my keynotes, but really being there was just, phew...

@freyablekman what the fuck does doing your nails have to do with understanding physics? That's just an absurd assertion. Also, nice nails.

@travisfw @RadtkeJCJ i only hire people who do an outstanding job. I just don’t demoralise them by telling them that they don’t belong because of some superficial aspect of their life, looks, or fashion choices

Admittedly I’ve had few physicist colleagues who had VERY long nails: they spent too much time programming computers, plugging in cables, wielding battle-axes against funding agencies, that sort of thing. But I’m sure it’s doable.
