      Please recommend me a #Linux desktop for my daughter’s laptop. #Ubuntu just refused to boot yesterday. Also all that #snap shenanigans… Looks like I need something more stable, but less harsh than #Debian. #Mint maybe?

      I actually would use plain debian (personally with KDE) on mine if its hardware isn't extremely new.
      I just like how hassle free it goes.
      I've got it on a laotp and a desktop, and you can still install a flatpack for a few programs that you need to be extremely up to date while having low maintainance.

      I've got some with Manjaro KDE too, they work good too, but it's a tiny bit more to manually maintainance after an upgrade sometimes (seldom)

        @yehor check out https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/silverblue/

        Immutable image means if you fuck it up you just reboot and there it is again, working as before.

                @yehor I can recommend both Mageia, https://www.mageia.org , for a slow stable release distribution. If you or her is interested in something that has a faster release cycle and generally stable as well Fedora (or one of its spins), https://fedoraproject.org/ , is a good choice as well.

                    I'd go with #LinuxMint. In this moment it's the best beginner (and noto only) linux distro.

                          Been playing with #zorinOS (Debian) and #cachyOS (arch) recently. They both decent distros but I'm more comfortable with Debian based OS.

                              @Laird_Dave @yehor I would also say that immutables like Silverblue are worth giving a try.

                              I use Silverblue as my daily driver and it is quite simple to use.

                                @yehor@glitchy.social i use Fedora and it doesnt have as much bullshit as the rest. Software is relatively up to date and is relatively stable. The only post install tip id recommend is to install https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.flattool.Warehouse and remove Fedora Flatpak remote.

                                A propos Mint, please dont do this to yourself. They ship ancient version of apps (their GNOME calendar is on version 41, released in 2020. In a couple weeks 50 releases) and ancient version of GNOME.
