What is the point of interacting on social media if you are unable to freely express yourself?
Part of the moderation process is determining whether the content in question is illegal internationally or in the Netherlands where the instance is hosted. If it is not, which is the case we determine whether anyone in particular is being targeted or harassed by it. If not, then no further action is needed. If so, then we ask whether that person has taken measures to suppress the content through word lists, mutes and blocks. If that is not the case, then we encourage that they do so and no further action is taken. If the person has, and the individual has circumvented those measures by contacting them directly through a secondary account or indirectly by appearing in the threads with which they've interacted then we investigate the matter further and take appropriate action when necessary.
Those are the typical criteria with which we moderate our instance. Posts and users from poa.st, nicecrew.digital and cawfee.club have been suspended from our instance which prevents further federation. Such was the case just recently when a particularly caustic individual interacting with our instance took issue with a post one of our moderators made.
You may not personally like our moderation policies, philosophy or culture of the instance. However, that does not change the fact that we do indeed moderate the instance in accordance with our shared beliefs, where and when appropriate. Likes or boosts does not necessarily always equate to endorsement which is why we exercise discretion over edgy content. We are aware that it may not be entirely representative of that person, their interests or disposition.
We moderate our instance the way we do as there are precious little out there that do strive to strike that balance between allowing someone to be comfortable enough to express the full range of themselves while remaining friendly and inclusive. We've been marginalized through censorship in communities by those that share the same disposition as yourself. As such, we prioritize freedom of expression and speech above all else and will only intervene when necessary. We don't want anyone else have to feel the same way we did.
If you have a problem with that, then you are more than welcome to go ahead and #fediblock us. But know that you'll be known to us someone that has engaged in bad faith to slander us over political differences.
